The Forward Bend Test, also known as Adam’s test, is a popular scoliosis screening test.

It is a simple, non-invasive screening method that does not require any equipment and can be performed easily and safely at home.

Adam’s test is a standard screening test used by medical professionals involved in the orthopedic health of children and adolescents. Its results can be an important indication that you should consult a specialist.

When performed correctly, Adam’s test can be a valuable tool for identifying possible signs of scoliosis. In this position, the spine is much more visible, making deviations from normal easier to detect.

How to perform it?

Ask your child to bend forward at a 90-degree angle, with feet together and knees straight, while the arms and head are relaxed and hanging down. Bend down as well and, from the same level, observe the back from behind and from the front. What you should look for is whether the two sides of the back are symmetrical.

In scoliosis, one side of the rib cage is usually higher than the other. Most often, this is the right side, as this is where most children develop scoliosis. This finding indicates vertebral rotation, or twisting of the spine.

As you can see in the image, the first picture on the left shows a normal spine, while the second shows scoliosis.

The benefits of early detection are too important to be ignored. When scoliosis is identified in time, the prognosis is usually good and the problem can often be managed successfully.
