Low Back and Back Pain
Nowadays, the incidence of low back pain is increasing in the older population, often as a result of a sedentary lifestyle. There is evidence that non-specific pain in the lumbar region of the spine appears even in teenagers, especially in women, in children who spend long periods sitting, and in individuals with a family history. People with scoliosis also frequently experience such pain.
It is believed that the modern way of life leads to muscle atrophy due to prolonged inactivity, resulting in a reduction of the physiological curves (lumbar lordosis), which is associated with low back pain. There is evidence that the size of the scoliotic curve is not related to spinal pain. In fact, the cause is the change in the sagittal (lateral) profile of the spine. It is common for people with a more severe form of scoliosis to experience sharper pain compared with those with a milder form of the condition. It is assumed that curves of the lumbar and thoracolumbar regions of the spine are more frequent causes of low back pain than those of the thoracic region.
The goal of treating scoliosis in adults differs from that in children, who are in a period of growth and development. The result of treatment in adults is increased functionality and mobility, reduced spinal pain, and an improved quality of life.
